Physical Fitness Friday Five

Sophia posted this wonderful FF: "I just got back from an 8 mile bike ride down the beach boardwalk near our home, and was struck with the number of people out enjoying physical activity. Runners, other cyclists, surfers, swimmers, dogwalkers, little kids on scooters....

It's easy to lose track of my physical self-care in the midst of flurried preparation for a final on-campus interview Monday for a college teaching position in the Midwest (prayers welcome!) and the family move that would accompany it. But each day that I do make time to walk or ride my bike it is such a stress reliever that it is well worth the time invested!

So how about you and your beautiful temple of the Holy Spirit?"

1. What was your favorite sport or outdoor activity as a child?
When I was a kid we had a huge backyard and all of our activities took place there. I liked riding my bike on the streets of my small town, playing games with my friends in the backyard-cowboys and Indians-I had a Davey Crockett hat and cap gun and holster!

2. P.E. class--heaven or the other place?
I went to Catholic School, 6 periods per day and one was religion, so if you took band (and I did just to avoid gym for 4 years) you didn't have to take gym. I didn't know I was a lesbian then, but the thought of undressing and showering with other girls just undid me. Little did I know, I would be undressing and dressing in band uniform in the tiniest of rooms with all the other girls in the band virtually the first day!

3. What is your favorite form of exercise now?
I love to walk around the city that never sleeps. I also swim, not very well, in my gym.

4. Do you like to work out solo or with a partner?
I like to walk along because I can walk at my own pace which is considerably slower than my friends, cane and all. I'm also easily distracted by sales, bookstores and various things to take pictures of.

5. Inside or outside?
Both, see above.

Cities are wonderful places to walk. There is so much to see and observe that you almost don't notice the exercise part of it!

Great video! Thanks. I'm impressed that you swim on a regular basis. I haven't done that for decades and keep thinking it would be good to do--and the idea that I would not be "good" bothers me, but it's the truth that you accept! Thanks for modeling that for me.

Wow, a Davey Crockett hat and cap gun & holster! Very cool! You would have been welcome in our neighborhood cowboys and Indians games. :)

Sometimes walking alone is a real gift to me...

I had a hyserectomy Wednesday. Obviously needed - initially biopsy shows no cancer, but the surgery showed no clear reason why I was suffering so much (fibroids were small...) so, still waiting the final biopsy report. Still, as my dr. says 90% of the treatment for uterine cancer has already been done...

all that is to say, now home, I am doing well - but can't exercise for a few weeks, which I will miss.

I too love to walk that city that never sleeps and swim (also not well, but that is beside the point)....

Love the swimming dog!

I have loved this song ever since my sister-in-law gave me my first McGarrigle Sisters album (vinyl of course) and then, the swimming dog (the springer spaniel) looks uncannily like my dog Rusty! He goes into the old beaver pond when OHP takes him camping in our woods, but I don't know if he actually swims. (I'm catching up slowly after a two-week Internet Fast while on vacation.)

I found your comment about not wanting to shower with other girls in school and not knowing that you were a lesbian back then interesting.
Funny thing, I'm hetero but I loved locker room nudity and showering when I was in high school and at the time it made me wonder if I was lesbian or bi. I took to locker room nudity like a duck to water when I was in high school. I was thrilled that our school required everyone to shower after gym class. I loved being nude with other girls and seeing other girls nude
I was only willing to tell my best friend at the time about how i liked looking at the other girls nude, and I asked her if she liked it too. She said that it didn't bother her, but that it also didn't excite her or anything. I was convinced for a while that I was a lesbian. Of course I was still a virgin at the time, and it wasn't until after my first sexual experience with a boy that I then knew for sure that I was hetero.

Even now my sexual desire is for men, yet I still prefer the sight a nude FEMALE body.

It would really be great if people give value to having a regular physical fitness activity. By doing so, people will maintain a healthy body.
