Friday Five-Back to School

Sally posted this-

It's time for a Back-To-School Friday Five!

1. Is anyone going back to school, as a student or teacher, at your house? How's it going so far?
BL has gone back to school on a part time basis, taking ASL. She is very loud for a signer. I hear sighs, and hands slamming from the other room. I think it’s going well so far, but there’s only been one class. Sometimes they go to a bar and practice ‘talking.’

2. Were you glad or sad when back-to-school time came as a kid?
I was always terrified. I hated school although I was good at the academic part of it. I was afraid of the other students and didn’t make friends easily. As time went on I made one or two good friends in classes, but still didn’t like it. College changed everything.

3. Did your family of origin have any rituals to mark this time of year? How about now?
New uniforms-I went to Catholic School. Actually, some years we would take the train to Cleveland to buy new clothes. My cousin was a chubby girl and the closest Lane Bryant was there so, we had a fun day with my mother, aunt, cousin and me on the train, havving lunch in the dining car-white tableclothes in those days. Then we went shopping in the big stores. I got shoes in my size-10-I developed big feet early!

4. Favorite memories of back-to-school outfits, lunchboxes, etc?

Actually I was thinking about ‘what if I went to the local-public- School. I probably would have been better for me. The school was on the street where I lived and I commuted to the next city, with school bus stops a good 45 minutes each way. But I would have had to deal with dressing in regular clothes. Uniforms just made things easier. The uniform and a pair of Bass Weejuns and you were set!

5. What was your best year of school?
1992-1996-the years I got my masters degree in counseling. I was an adult. I knew who I was and I was the master of my own destiny.
Of my entire 12 years of elementary and high school, probably my junior and senior years when I finally had group a friends to pal around with and was starting to know a little about who I was, but not much and not for years.

Blue

I've been feeling a little blue for the past week of so.
Maybe it's the years old back-to-school feeling. Or maybe it's the forthcoming anniversary of 9/11-tomorrow. I lost a family member on that horrible day and still feel a shiver of fear when I hear airplanes a little close overhead.
It could be the days getting shorter and going to work in the dark once again. I really like the long days of sunlight of summer.
Or maybe I'm starting to fight that green devil, depression that has haunted me.
I don't have time for this.
