I also am dismayed by your #2 and wonder if it would have happened absent the news about the vote -- some people tend to overreact when something's in the news. As for finding church fairs in NYC -- hmm. Maybe people are too busy to make stuff? The two Catholic churches in our town (now merged with several others into one parish, 3 priests) both have fairs, a mixture of members' stuff and local crafters renting tables. Is there any kind of neighborhood newspaper where you live? I suppose trolling the 'net for churches nearby and checking their websites might work.
